1. Don’t fall for the hype. This applies to equipment, facilities and markets, and other business requirements. Do your research and always ask for a demo or sample before purchasing. When it comes to gear, each manufacturer has its ups and downs. Equipment is sometimes better suited for certain markets, too.
2. Talk to existing operators. See what they say about certain equipment, pricing, and other aspects of their business model. The ones doing it for a long time have figured it out and know what works and what doesn’t. This tip is especially important when considering equipment.
3. Play the product. This means actually going somewhere and seeing how things are done. Make the drive to a laser tag facility and observe your whole experience from the time you set foot in the door until you leave for the day. Try to find one operating with the equipment and services that you also plan to offer. Be prepared to drive a while in order to find someone outside of your market, otherwise, you may end up being competitors.
4. Leading edge is bleeding edge. Brand new equipment often has drawbacks. Durability is key here. It’s exciting to have something new that no one else yet offers but be prepared for issues in operation, durability, and complexity. If you trust your equipment provider, approach them directly on their new products and ask for demos or offer to help test.
5. Don’t leave money on the table. Always strive for the best price on everything you buy, even if you just got a deal for a price cheaper than the “other guy.”
